FAMILY BACKGROUND

I was introduced to alternative healing practices early in life. My father was a Doctor of Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine. In addition, he was a martial arts teacher. My mother has a Diploma of Herbalism and she practiced Tai Chi Gong exercises daily. Growing up in this family included eating mother's healthy meals and listening to father talk about medicine, diet, and exercise. This helped spur my interest in learning about health science discoveries and healthy lifestyle habits.

ACADEMICS

I believe choosing the right education and profession is key to personal satisfaction and financial security. My first degree was a Bachelor of Commerce. I chose business studies for the practical reasons of securing employment and building my financial future. My second degree was a Bachelor of Social Work. I was inspired by co-workers who were counsellors for children and parents. At middle-age, I returned to school for social work studies and transitioned my career from administration to direct client service. My third degree was a Master of Social Work. This qualification was necessary in order to practice counselling in community agencies and private business.

WORK LIFE

In business, I worked in a wide range of careers in computer technology, finance, administration, sales management, human resources, held team leader and manager positions. I was a career counsellor and later became a board member at a employment services organization. As a social worker, I specialized in counseling in the mental health and family services sector. Mental health issues can affect anyone regardless of income levels. I have published several editions of a Health and Wellness Newsletter and taught Tai Chi classes for all ages.

PERSONAL INTERESTS

In my spare time, I do lots of volunteering in the community, relax at a spiritual retreat centre, teach Tai Chi classes, attend church, sing opera and classical music, and go sailing in the summer. I have a passion for social justice and believe that every person should have access to basic necessities such as affordable housing and universal basic income.
